The Freedman's Bureau was to provide relief to Southerners for both black and white. First organization to provide food,clothing,fuel,medical services, job and family location. -

In spring, 1865 Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S.Grant at Appomattox Courthouse. The North wins. -
Lincoln Assassination
Abraham Lincoln was assassinated on April 15, 1865 by John Wilkes. Due to him ending slavery in every state triggered his assassination. -
13th Amendment Ratified
Jan 1865 Congress proposed the 13th amendment and took effect Dec. 18,1865. 3.5 million were free'd but still had no rights. -
Civil Rights Act of 1866
Gave African Americans the same rights as whites. Even though Johnson vetoed, the congress still passed. -
Memphis Race Riots
Memphis race riots was where white men began to kill off or assaulted every black person they came across. This destruction lasted 3 days in order for soldiers to gain control again. -
New Orleans Race Riot
White violence directed towards black people in Louisiana. At least 35 were killed and 100 were wounded -
1st Reconstruction Act
Also known as "An Act to Provide More Efficient Government of Rebel states" passed by the 39th Congress. Johnson vetoed this bill but the Congress overrode that veto. -
2nd Reconstruction Act
Rebels states were divided up into military. The government was in charge of the people and how voting went about in those rebels states. -
3rd Reconstruction Act
Gave supreme power to the five Union generals overseeing Reconstruction in the five districts. Each involved several former states of confederacy. -
4th Reconstruction Act
Southern states would be readmitted to the Union following th Civil War. Rebel states had to craft new constitutions which helped ratify the 14th amendment. -
14th Amendment Ratified
After slavery, white people would not accept blacks as one.This amendment granted equal and civil rights to African Americans. -
Grant Elected President
This was the first election during the reconstruction era. Republican nominee Ulysses S. Grant defeated Horation Seymour of the Democratic Party. -
First Black Senator Elected
Hiram Revels was the first black Republican senator representing the state of Mississippi. He served only one year but made a way for other African Americans. -
15th Amendment Ratified
Men struggled to vote and get their vote to count. This amendment gave men the right to vote but still no women could vote. -
First Black Governor Elected
P.B.S Pinchback was the first black govenor representing Louisiana. He was the 24th governor. -
Civil Rights Act of 1875
Also known as the Enforcement Act, guaranteed African Americans equal treatment in public spaces and service in juries. Enacted during the reconstruction era. -
Compromise of 1876
Hayes becomes president as long as federal troops are removed from the South. This was a way for whites to continue the confederacy in the South. -
Reconstruction Ends
Congress lost interests in Reconstruction. Republicans retired and focus shifted to economics.
