The Freedman's Bureau
The Freedman's Bureau is created allowing freed African Amercians schooling, shelter, and other neccesities. The men and women were learning to read. The African Americans still had high hopes for America and were going to stay there free. -
The War is Over
Lee has surrendered to Grant. Now the Civil War has ended. The South must be rebuilt. Reconstruction has officially begun. -
Lincoln is Assasinated
President Lincoln attended a play at Ford's Theater and is shot in the head by John Wilkes Boothe. Later he can not survive the injuries inflicted and is later found dead. Vice-President Andrew Johnson takes his place as president. -
The Black Codes are Created
The Black Codes have been enacted in the south. The now freed slaves have some restrictions. Some northeners and freed slaves called these codes "slavery in disguise." -
The Thirteenth Amendment is Passed
Congress has approved the thirteenth ammendment. This means slavery is abolished in the United States. African Americans were now officially free. But during this time the Southern states also create the Black Codes that control the freed slaves. -
The Civil Rights act of 1866
This means all african american men are equal to all white men. President Andrew Johnson tried to veto the bill but he was overturned by two-thirds majority. -
Memphis Race Riot
White civilians and police forces destroy part of Memphis. They destroy 90 homes and kill 46 African Americans. -
The Ku Klux Klan
The Ku Klux Klan was found in Pulaski, Tenneessee. The KKK(Ku Klux Klan) was a terrorist group that terrorized the freed African Americans. This would involve lynching, torturing, beating, and killing. -
Reconstruction Act
Congress has divided the former Confederacy into 5 different districts. There they have elections where anyone man can vote. Women still can not vote. -
Andrew Johnson's Impeachment
President Johnson was accused of 11 articles of impeachment. But he nearly avoided being impeached with one vote. So he was still in office. -
The Fourteenth Amendment
The Fourteenth Amendment is ratified. This means anyone born in the country is a citizen. Freed African American slaves were included. No state could take away anyone's citizenship. -
A New President
A new president has been elected. Ulysses S. Grant, former Union general, has been chosen to take Johnson's place. He is officialy the 18th president. -
The First Black Senator
The very first African American senator has been elected. Hiram Revels has gained enough support to be elected. He will serve from February 1870 to March 1871 -
The Fifteenth Amendment
The fifteeenth amendment has been ratified. This means any one is allowed to vote. Everyone except for women. -
Reconstruction Ends
New President Rutherford B. Hayes has taken all troops out of the South. He has declared Reconstruction over.
