  • Freedmen's Bureau

    A U.S. government agency that was established to direct provisions. The agency aided to those who were poor whites and former slaves.
  • Civil War Ends

    The north (Union) prevails over the south (Confederacy). Robert E. Lee surrendered the last major confederate army to Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Courthouse.
  • Lincoln Assassinated

    Lincoln was assassinated on April 15, 1865. The person who assassinated Lincoln was named John Wilkes Booth.
  • 13th Amendment Ratified

    The 13th Amendment abolished slavery in the United States. Congress passed passed the amendment first on January 31st, 1865 but ratified it on the 6th of December.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1866

    The civil rights act was passed by congress over the veto of Andrew Johnson. The act declared that all persons born in the United States were now citizens.
  • Memphis Race Riots

    The Memphis massacre was a series of violent events that occurred in Memphis,Tennessee. The racial violence was ignited by political,social and racial tension. Tensions went on from May 1 to May 3rd.
  • New Orleans race riots

    The massacre was violent. It was white democrats, including police and firemen attacking republicans mostly black.
  • 1st reconstruction act

    This act was laid out to readmit southern states into the union. The bills were written mostly by republicans
  • 2nd reconstruction act

    The second act helped answer first act.
  • 3rd reconstruction act

    The third of reconstruction act gave supreme power to the five union general overseeing in the five districts.
  • 4th reconstruction act

    All four statutes passed during the reconstruction era and were to be readmitted to the union.
  • 14th Amendment Ratified

    The amendment grants citizenship to all people born in the U.S.. When the amendment was made it included former slaves who had just been freed after the civil war.
  • Grant Elected President

    The presidential election was 21st quadrennial presidential election. It was the first to be held during the reconstruction era.
  • 15th Amendment Ratified

    The 15th amendment was passed by congress on February 26,1869. The amendment granted African American men rights to vote.
  • 1st Black senator elected

    Hiram Rhodes Revels was the first black senator to be elected. Mississippi was the only state during this era to elect black senator.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1875

    Guaranteed African Americans equal treatment in public transportation. The U.S. supreme court declared the act.
  • Compromise of 1876

    The compromise was an agreement between the North and South. The agreement was an unwritten deal between congress.
  • Reconstruction ends

    The reconstruction era was the period in American history which lasted from 1863 to 1877. It was a significant chapter in history of American rights.
  • 1st Black governor elected

    Douglas Wilder was the first black governor to be elected since the reconstruction era. He served as the 66th governor of Virginia from 1990-1994.
