    13th Amendment Ratified
    The 13th Amendment officially abolished slavery in the U.S. It passed the Senate on April 8, 1864 and later passed the House of Representatives. Abraham Lincoln accepted the Joint Resolution of Congress.

    Freedmen's Bureau
    In the Freedmen's Bureau, the goal was to supply reassurance to both black and white people of the south. A huge amount of slaves weren't able to read and write and some were denied education.
  • Civil War Ends

    Civil War Ends
    The Civil War first started after the Confederates attacked the union soldiers on April 12, 1861. The war ended due to Robert E. Lee giving in to the last big Confederate army to Ulysses S. Grant.
  • Lincoln Assassinated

    Lincoln Assassinated
    Abraham Lincoln was shot by a stage actor named John Wilkes Booth while watching a play called "Our American Cousin". This tragedy occurred at Ford's Theatre. Lincoln passed away the next morning.

    Civil Rights Act of 1866
    This act had been passed by the congress over Andrew Johnson's veto. It stated that everyone who is born in the U.S. are citizens without the judging of color or race.
  • Memphis Race Riots

    Memphis Race Riots
    This event was caused by hatred towards certain races. It included an outbreak of violent acts that went on from May 1st to May 3rd. Blacks suffered the most injuries/deaths and some were even jailed. Neighborhoods were also being destroyed. This occurred in Memphis, Tennessee.

    New Orleans Race Riots
    The New Orleans Massacre happened during a violent dispute as white Democrats attacked (mostly black) Republicans. This massacre indicated conflicts during reconstruction. It also lead to 35 black citizens being killed and more than 100 wounded.

    1st Reconstruction Act
    The first Reconstruction Act set the procedure for allowing Southern states into the Union. This Act also passed into law over President Johnson's veto and applied to many confederate states except Tennessee.
  • 2nd Reconstruction Act

    2nd Reconstruction Act
    The Second Reconstruction Act had enlarged the first one. It explained that military instructors held authority to register voters & hold electors in their areas. It also improved on the 1st Reconstruction Act in the method of counting votes.

    3rd Reconstruction Act
    The Third Reconstruction Act supplied power to the 5 union generals controlling Reconstruction in five districts in the South. Each district demanded state ratification of the 14th Amendment.

    The 14th Amendment was soon approved to the United States. It pledged that everyone who is born in the U.S. and subject to the jurisdiction are officially a U.S. citizen. No states were allowed to take away any rights or privileges of any human.

    Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th President of the United States. He held this position from the year 1869 to 1877. He used to be a Commanding General of the U.S. Army.
  • 15th Amendment Ratified

    15th Amendment Ratified
    The 15th Amendment allowed African American men the right to vote. It was passed by Congress and adopted to the U.S. constitution in 1870. This amendment also stated that the right for citizens to vote by any state based on their race, color etc.
  • 1st Black Senator Elected

    1st Black Senator Elected
    The first black senator was named Hiram Rhodes Revels. He had been elected by the Mississippi state legislature. He was a former Union Army Chaplain who traveled to Washington in the year of 1870. It was an important moment in American history.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1875

    Civil Rights Act of 1875
    The Civil Rights Act pronounced the "equality of all men before the law". This act didn't allow any racial unfairness in any public place/area. Anyone denied entry to the facilities by race would be granted to monetary restitution. The law became unconstitutional in 1883.
  • Reconstruction Ends

    The Reconstruction ended when public attention stopped from the integration of former slavery. The battle between Johnson & Congress came to an end
  • 1st Black Governor Elected

    1st Black Governor Elected
    Lawrence Douglas Wilder made history and became the very first African American in the U.S. elected governor of a state. He also became the first African American to keep an abroad office in Virginia.
