The Freedmen´s Bureau
The Freedmen´s Bureau was initiated by president Abraham Lincoln in order to protect emancipated slaves who were transitioning from their slave life into a life of freedom. It helped freedmen by giving them a chance of education, regulation conditions in labor, and brought the justice in cases involving them. -
President Lincoln is Assassinated
President Lincoln was shot to death by confederate, John Wilkes Booth at the Ford Theater in Washington. Andre Johnson then became president after his death and Wilkes was captured and shot to death. -
The 13th Amendment is Passed
The 13th Amendment was added to the constitution after the Civil War and president Lincoln´s emancipation proclamation. It abolished slavery, making it illegal in the U.S. -
Civil Rights Act of 1866
The Civil Rights Act was an act to push the U.S. citizen rights to the African-American who became freedmen. It protected them from black codes and gave the freedmen a chance of equality. -
Ku Klux Klan
The Klu Klux Klan (KKK) was a secret society that was formed in the South in order to maintain white supremacy, or over power Republican Congress. The formed this society after being humiliated to their loss in the Civil War and had lost power after being defeated. -
Military Reconstruction Acts
The North split the South into five military districts, each with different governments, and brought a huge amount of equality to the freedmen by giving the the right to vote, hold political offices and become judges or chiefs. It ratified the 14th amendment granting citizenship and rights to the African Americans. -
Reconstruction Ends
The South was destroyed and needed to be rebuilt in order to be apart of the Union again and be at peace with the North, abolishing slavery. The Reconstruction came to an end under Rutherford B. Hayes, U.S. president, in which he removed federal troops and let state governments take over, yet most changes of equality were almost instantly changed back again.. -
Andrew Johnson´s Impeachment Trial
The house of Representatives wanted to impeach Johnson due to his violation of the Tenure Office Act after removing Edwin Stanton from office. Since he was appointed by Lincoln, it kept him from being removed from office. He seemed to be more lenient toward the South and formed black codes, in which limited the freedom of African Americans. -
Election of Ulysses S. Grant
Grant´s presidency involved scandals of people in his administration who stole from the government, financial problems when the stocks crashed and caused numerous people to lose their jobs. However, he did push for the 15th Amendment (right to vote no matter one´s race, color, etc.) and the right to be a U.S citizen, he helped African Americans tremendously by pushing for equality. -
14th Amendment
The 14th Amendment granted citizenship and equal civil and legal rights to African Americans and enslaved people who had been emancipated after the American Civil War. -
15th Amendment
The 15th Amendment protected the voting rights of all citizens, even former slaves, no matter their race, color of heir skin, etc.
