    Black Codes
    Black codes were brought together to help the African Americans. Some of the black codes prevented the African Americans from owning anything from farms to land. If th African Americans didn't have any jobs the black codes say that an officer could arrest them. If u were a freed man or women following the black codes was a little bit better than slavery.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1866

    Civil Rights Act of 1866
    This law gave power to the federal governtment to protect the African American rights. This law was also good for African Americans because it granted them citizenship. This meant that they would now be considered citizens of the United States, and were going to be in slavery as much as they did before. This act was meant to counter the supreme court decision between Sandford and Dred Scott. This decision was made in 1857.
  • Reconstruction Acts

    Reconstruction Acts
    This law required that those states form new governments. Only Tennessee, which had ratified the amendment, kept its government to rejoin the union. Each state also had to submit a new state constitution to congress for approval. A second reconstruction act empowered the army to register voters in each district and to help organize the state constitutional conventions.
  • 14th Amendment

    14th Amendment
    The 14th amendment guaranteed that citizenship would not be later taken away by passing another law. Another part of the 14th amendment said that no state. Could take a person's life, liberty, or property. It also excluded former confederate leaders from holding any national or state office unless congress had pardoned them.
  • 15th Amendment

    15th Amendment
    When the states passed the 15th amendment it was and important amendment. This amendment guarantee died that state and federal governments could not deny the right to vote to any male citizen because of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. When the states ratified the fifth tenth amendment in 1870, republicans thought their job was largely done.
