Acts of Recontsuction
The Union seperated the south into five military districts, with a general assigned to each one. They were created to protect the African Amenricans. The white people in south terrorize and maybe lynch, (or kill in angry mobs) the African Americans. Some people came from the north into the southern states to educate. African Americans. In the years between 1865-1877, the military protected the African Americans from harm, and the African Americans got education for the first time. -
Black Codes
The Southern states passed laws to restrict the free African Americans. The black codes allowed police officers to fine and/or arrest the African Americans who don't have jobs, forcing them to work. African Americans must have a liscence to work in a job that is non-agricultural.Life under the black codes was the same thing as slavery. -
Civil Rights Act of 1866
The Congress tried the African Americans' rights. They set up apecial courts to people who violated the African Americans' rights. The Radical Republicans passed a bill that granted African Americans citizenship. President Johnson disapproved the bills and vetoed them both. The republicans did not let the vetos stand in their way. The republicans override the vetos. -
The 14 Amendment
The crongess proposed the 14 amendment. "All people who are born or naturalized in the U.S are United State Citizens." -
The 15 amendment
The congress added the 15 amendmet to the Consituion. All male citizens cannot be denied their right to vote because of of theire race, color, etc.
