Civil Rights Act of 1866
This act was passed by congress after Andrew Johnson tried to veto it. It declared all born in U.S are citizens without restrictions. -
Memphis Race Riots
This event occurred from may 1 to may 3. 46 blacks and 2 whites died during this riot which is the worst in U.S History. -
New Orleans Race Riots
Democrats were angered by black code enactment which cause the riot. They attacked Republicans or black people parading outside the Mechanics Institute. -
1st Reconstruction Act
Brought southern states back to into the Union following civil war. bill was written by republicans -
2nd Reconstruction Act
Military commanders had responsibility to register voters and hold elections. Blacks had to reclaim their civil and political rights as Americans -
3rd Reconstruction Act
Gave supreme power to the five Union Generals. There were 5 districts and each general had several former confederate states. -
4th Reconstruction Act
Restricted political participation of former confederate leaders . This act meant they can't vote or threaten anyone not to vote. -
Reconstruction Ends
The compromise of 1877 was the end of reconstruction era. Hayes withdrew the last fed troops from the south and the Republican governments collapsed. Black rights in the south collapsed also under white rule. -
14h Amendment Ratified
Gave citizenship to U.S born people. the Dred Scott case was overturned also. Gave equal protection under law. -
Grant Elected President
Ulysses S. Grant defeated Horatio Seymour of the Democratic Party. First presidential election after the Civil War. -
15h Amendment Ratified
Reconstruction Act only gave blacks in the south the right to vote. Ratified in 1870 no citizen can be denied the right to vote because of their race , color etc. -
1st Black Senator Elected
Hiram Revels is the first black senator from Mississippi. Blanche K. Bruce is the first black senator to serve a full six-year term. -
1st Black Governor Elected
Douglas Wilder is the first black governor. He was born in Richmond , Virginia. -
Civil Rights Act of 1875
Known as the Enforcement Act. Gave blacks equal treatment in public transportation and public accommodations. -
Compromise of 1876
Compromise ended the reconstruction era. Southern Democrats promise to protect civil and political rights.
