Three ways the organization helped freedom were, the administration of justice in cases concerning the black freedmen, management of abandoned and confiscated property including the redistribution of abandoned lands to former slaves ,and support of education for freedmen.

    The Reconstruction officially ended under the presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes in 1877. He removed the federal troops from the South and the state governments took over. Also many of the changes to equal rights were immediately reversed.
