The Freemen's Bureau
The Freedmen's Bureau was a federal agency established on March 3, 1865 just before the end if civil war. Three ways the organization helped The Freemen's was one the administration of justice in cases concerning the black freedman, second was the support of education for freedmen, and lastly the regulations of conditions of freedmen (black) labor. -
President Lincoln is Assassinated
On April 14, 1865 Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. After Abraham was assassinated Andrew Johnson became the president. -
The 13th Amendment is Passed
The 13th Amendment made slavery illegal in the United States, and was adopted as part of the Constitution on December 6, 1865. The amendment still allows for slavery as a punishment for a crime. The 13th amendment also allows for people to be prosecuted for forcing someone to work against their free will. -
Civil Rights Act of 1866
The civil right act were passed in 1871, 1964 and 1991 and between these years congress enacted extensive education affording African Americans equal status under the law. -
Ku Klux Kan
The goals the Ku Klux Kan had was to oppose the Reconstruction policies of the radical Republican congress and to maintain "white supremacy." -
Military Reconstruction Acts
Congress passed the Military Reconstruction Acts because the Congressional Elections of 1866 brought radical republicans to power and wanted to punish the south. -
Andrew Johnson’s Impeachment Trial
The House of Representatives impeached President Johnson due to him being accused of "high crimes and misdemeanors". One fact on the impeachment of Andrew Johnson was the radicals becoming more powerful by gaining a two-thirds margin in the 1866 Congressional elections -
Election of Ulysses S. Grant
Many people in in Grants administration were crooks who stole from from the government and that was what caused Ulysses S. Grant to be marked with scandals. Grant tried to advance rights for for African Americans by frighting for African Americans and Native Americans and pushing for the 15th amendment, giving the right for all men to vote regardless of race. -
14th Amendment
The Fourteenth Amendment grants citizenship to "all. persons born or naturalized in the United States" which included former slaves who had just been freed after the Civil War. -
15th Amendment
The significance for the Fifteenth Amendment was to protect the voting rights of all citizens regardless of race or the color of their skin. It also protected the voting rights of former slaves. It was ratified on February 3, 1970. -
Reconstruction Ends
What finally led to the end of Reconstruction was the compromise of 1877, which was an informal agreement between southern democrats and allies of the Republican Rutherford Hayes to settle the 1876 presidential election and marked the end of the Reconstruction era.
