The Freedmen's Bureau
The Freedmen's Bureau was a federal agency established on March, 1865. It was establish to help and protect emancipated slaves, in which they were trying to leave the slavery life. It provided food, housing and medical aid to Freedmen. And for those in need they established schools and offered legal assistance. -
President Lincoln is Assassinated
John Wilkes Booth shoot Lincoln's in the back of the head, while he was attending a play in Washington, D.C.. He was pronounce dead on April 15, 1865. After the assassination the Vice President Andrew Johnson became the president. -
The 13th Amendment is Passed
On December 6, 1865 the Thirteenth Amendment was adopted as part of the Constitution, in which this Amendment made slavery illegal in the United States. -
Civil Rights Act of 1866
The Civil Right Act of 1866 purpose was to protect Freedmen from legislation in the Southern States such as the Black Codes and the Vagrancy Laws. -
Ku Klux Klan
The Ku Klux Klan also known as the KKK is a secret society based in the South. Its goal was to oppose the Reconstruction policies of the radical Republican Congress and to maintain "white supremacy". -
Military Reconstruction Acts
The Congress pass the Military Reconstruction Acts because they wanted to punish the South, and to prevent the ruling class from continuing in power. -
Andrew Johnson's Impeachment Trial
Andrew Johnson was impeached because of his removal of Edwin Stanton, The Secretary of War and member of his cabinet, in violation of the law called Tenure of Office Act. The Republicans also passed the Civil Rights of 1866 overriding the President's veto. -
Election of Ulysses S. Grant
Grant's presidency was to be marked with scandals because many of his administration were crooks who stole from the government. He fought for the Civil rights of African American (also the Native Americans), he pushed for the passage of the 15th Amendment, and he signed a bill that allowed persons of African descent to become U.S. citizens. -
14th Amendment
The 14th Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified on July 28, 1868. It grants citizenship to "all persons born or naturalized in the United States. -
15th Amendment
The 15th Amendment was ratified on February 3, 1870, in which it protects the voting rights of all citizens regardless of race or the color of their skin. It also protected the voting rights of former slaves -
Reconstruction Ends
During the Presidency of Rutherford B. Hayes in 1877 the Reconstruction officially ended. He removed the federal troops from the South and state government took over. And many of the changes to equal rights were reversed.
