    Freedmen´s Bureau
    An Organization that was established under the Freedmen´s Bureau Bill on March 3rd 1865. It was made to assist the newly freed slaves in education, regulating work conditions, supporting black people in court, and redistributing land. It was done in July 1st 1869.
  • Lincoln is assassinated

    Lincoln is assassinated
    John Wilkes Booth assassinated president Lincoln in the Fords Theater in a comical part. He then Jumped off and got away on horse back. This left him with a bounty of $100,000(1.7 million today). Andrew Johnson then assumed his position.
  • The 13th Amendment is passed

    The 13th Amendment is passed
    The 13th amendment made slavery illegal.
    Section 1 of the 13th amendment,"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."

    The civil rights were put in place to protect newly free slaves from the Black Codes in the south. President Andrew Johnson vetoed it, the law still passed however because the majority of congress deiced to override his veto.

    Ku Klux Klan
    The Ku Klux Klan was a secret society for southerners, or just racists. They believed black men should not hold places in political power ,and preached white supremacy. It was originally intended to be a social club for confederate soldiers, then quickly turned into a violent group.

    The confederate states were broken up into 5 military zones after the Norths victory. Blacks were given the rights to vote as well which was often in the favor of the North.President Johnson tried to veto both of these but congress overrode him. All his vetoes put him in the spotlight to getting impeached. The main goal behind this was to make sure the south doesn´t go out of control and rebel against the North.

    He was charged with with high crimes and misdemeanors. He was kept in office only because of one vote, if not for that vote he would be gone. He assumed the position of president after Lincolns assassination, however reconstruction would be hard. This was because he was a democrat who sympathized with the confederates.

    His presidency was riddled with scandals, one of which was many people in his own administration. They would steal money from the government. He had also pushed for the passage of the 15th amendment which gave all men the right to vote.

    The 14th Amendment states that anyone born in the US have an inherit citizenship. This also included freed slaves, they have US citizenship so everyone is entitled to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

    15th Amendment
    The significance of the of 15th Amendment was it outlawed litteracy tests and other things in the way of newly freed men to vote.

    The End of Reconstruction
    The country now had to reunite and reconstruct itself. The final straw of reconstruction northern troop had to move out of the south. In return the south get more spending to fix the south. They also get a southerner in presidential cabinet. In return the north got Rutherford B. Hayes for president.
