The Freedmen's Bureau is a group of people that helped the freed slaves. They provided food and clothing, healthcare, and education to the freed slaves. -
President Lincoln is Assassinated
Abraham Lincoln was assassinated at a play at Ford Theatre in Washington D.C. He and his wife were sitting in the Presidential box with his wife when he was assassinated for siding with the North. It was said that John Wilkes Booth murdered him and refused to surrender. After the assassination, Andrew Johnson was made to be the president after. -
The 13th Amendment is Passed
The thirteenth amendment was passed during the civil war times. It said no one should experience slavery or involuntary servitude unless they're duly convicted of a crime they've done. -
Civil Rights Act of 1866
The civil rights act granted more protection from slavery for African Americans. -
Ku Klux Klan
The Ku Klux Klan(or the K.K.K.) were super upset that their slave owning rights were taken so they aimed to make the lives of African Americans miserable and whoever sided with the African Americans were also targeted. -
Military Reconstruction Acts
The Military Reconstruction acts were passed because the south was still trying to have slavery and wouldn't treat African Americans right. The south created something called Black codes that is more like a different form of slavery. The north sent military south to ensure the southerners would stop it all. -
Andrew Johnson’s Impeachment Trial
Andrew Johnson was a supporter of slavery. He was impeached because he went against anti-slavery and didn't care what the south did. He also thought African Americans didn't have the right to vote. He allowed the south to create something called "Black Codes". -
Election of Ulysses S. Grant
His presidency was marked with scandals because many people in his administration were crooks who stole from the government. He fought for both African Americans and Native Americans and pushed for the 15th amendment to be passed. -
14th Amendment
The 14th amendment talks about someone's basic rights to life, liberty, and property. These things shouldn't be taken away unless it's a reasonable punishment for whatever bad thing they did, in this case a crime. It also gives everyone equal protection under laws. -
15th Amendment
The significance of this amendment gave people in America(except women for some reason) the right to vote without discrimination. This allowed any foreigner in America, especially African Americans, to vote. -
Reconstruction Ends
In the end, the south promised Hayes could become president if everything the north was doing to prevent slavery left their land, including the military. It was the Compromise of 1877. That brought everything back to square one.
