They wanted to punish the South, and to prevent the ruling class from continuing in power. -
Andrew Johnson’s Impeachment Trial
Andrew Johnson was impeached for his removal of Edwin Stanton in violation of the law Tenure of Office Act. Edwin Stanton thought the law of Tenure saved Andrew. One fact was that Republicans passed the Civil Rights Act overriding the presidents veto. -
Election of Ulysses S. Grant
Ulysses Grant presidency was marked with scandals because he ran his cabinet as a military base rather then civilian. Grant tried to advance rights for African Americans by signing the Civil Rights Act and signing the Enforcement Acts. -
14th Amendment
The amendment grants citizenship to "all persons born or naturalized in the United States". Referring to old slaves that have just been released after the Civil War. -
15th Amendment
The significance of the 15th Amendment is that it gave the African-Americans the right to vote. -
Reconstruction Ends
The Reconstruction ended under the pressure of Rutherford B Hayes in 1877. He removed the federal troops from the South and the state governments took over. Many of the equal rights rights were reversed.
