Because Andrew Johnson was a democrat many confederates received pardon for their actions and all southern states were able to re-join the union. -
The Ku Klux Klan
The KKK was a group formed to make the ex-slaves fearful and try to make them avoid using their rights using terrorism. Also formed to scare whites collaborating with the new governments. -
Impeachment
The Republicans had plans to impeach Johnson for his goals and decisions regarding the south, but decided not to with the upcoming election involving Ulysses S. Grant. -
The 14th Amendment
This amendment was put into place to gaurantee the federal protection of the basic civil rights. -
Civil Rights Act
This act prohibited discrimination in all public accomidations, one step toward equality for all people. -
Elections And Compromise
After a deadlock between Hayes and Tilden Hayes was declared the winner on the conditions that federal troops were removed from the south and democrats were given a portion of rights to federal jobs.
