Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction
Licoln wanted a moderated policy that would join the South with the Union instead of punishing it for treason. When 10% of a state's voters in the 1860 election had taken this oath, they could organize a new government. -
The Wade-Davis Bill
Required all white male farmers to take an oath of allegiance to the Union. After that happen, that state could hold a constitutional convention to create a new state government. -
Licoln's Assassination
The assassination of Abraham Licoln was a major turning point in reconstruction. Licoln had major plans for reconstruction, now all these strategies would be re-arranged by the the vice president. -
South Carolina Proclamation
Issued same day as the new Proclamation of Amnesty. This was a model of how Johnson wanted to restore the South to the Union. -
New Proclamation of Amnesty
This proclamation closely resembled the earlier one Licoln created. This would pardon all former citizens of the Confederacy who took an oath of loyalty to the Union and to return their property. -
Freedmen's Bureau
During progression of the war, many free African American soilders followed as General Sherman made his way through South Carolina and Georiga. Congress saw 40,000 men settled on S.C. and G.A. land and this is how this Bureau came about. -
Civil Rights Act
Granted everyone born in U.S. citizenship except Native Americans. Also allowed African Americans the right to own property and treated equally in the court. -
14th. Amendment
This amendment was created because Republicans feared Civil Rights Act might be over turned in court. "No states could deprive any person of life, liberty, or property." -
Military Reconstruction Act
Divided former Confederacy, except Tennesse, into five military districts.Each Confederate state had to hold convention and agree upon letting all male citizens vote, disgaurding race. -
Hiram Revels
Hiram Revel was the first African American to be elected Senate. This was a major turning point in reconstruction because now African Americans were becoimng apart of the politics. -
15th. Amendment
Declared that the right to vote should not be denied no matter race, color, or previous condition servitude. This amendment was implemented because congress saw African American suffrage. -
The Enforcment Acts
Congress passed the Enforcement Act to protect against the violence in the South mainly caused by the Ku Klux Klan. The Klan was an prodominatley white group that were determined to gain back control of the South for the Democratic Party. -
Education for Formely Enslaved
Education was now becoming more familiar in the African American community by the late 1870's. Reconstruction goverment built public school systems in the South in which about 600,000 African American children attended.
