Granted citizenship to all persons born in the United States except Native Americans, also allowed African Americans to own property and to be treated equally. -
Ku Klux Klan
Hooded white-robed Klan members rode in bands at night, terrorizing supporters of the Republican governments, burned African American homes, schools and tried to keep them from voting. ;( -
Election Day
Grants reputation carried him into the White House, he believed that the presidents role was to carry out the laws and leave the development of policy to Congress. -
Reconstuction Plan
By the late 1870s, all of the former Confederate states had rejoined the Union under the congressional Reconstruction plan. -
Ku Klux Klan Act
This was the 3rd act from the three Enforcement Acts it stated that it outlawed the activities of the Klan, local authorities arrested over 3,000 Klan members but only 600 were convicted and fewer went to jail. -

Helped the government pay off the bonds that had been issued to pay for the civil war. -

It made banks close, and the stock market plummeted all due to a Company that made people run scared. -
Whiskey Ring
A group of government officials and distillers in St.Louis, Missouri, cheated the government out of millions of dollars by filling in false tax reports. -
Carpetbaggers
Southerners, particulary Democratic Party supporters, referred to ths Northern newcomers as Carpetbaggers. -
Scalawags
While many Southerners disliked carpetbaggers, they also disliked white Southerns who worked with the Republicans and supported construction. Scalawags means-(weak, underfed, worthless animal). -
Compromise of 1877
Republican and Democratic leaders secretly hammered out a compromise to resolve the election impasse and address other outstanding issues. -
Sharecroppers
It can be a system of agricultural production where a landowner allows a sharecropper to use the land in return for a share of the crop produced on the land.
