feedmen's bureau
the Freedmen's Bureau helped over tens of thousands of former enslaved blacks. This gave them food, education, and basicly just helped them start their new lives. -
Aberham Lincoln's Assassination
Lincon was killed at a theater while watching play. He was shot once in the back of the head by John Wilks Booth. The gun shot instantly killed him. -
Andrew Johnson is elected
Andrew Johnson was a democrat. He was born in a log cabin with two illiterate parents. Johnson is ranked today as one of our worst presidents. -
the thirteen amendment is ratifyed
this amendment states the there will be no more slavery or working against will in the United States. The only excaption was if this person has commited a crime. This law was ratifyed last by Georgia. -
K.K.K.
K.K.K. stood for ku klux klan. this was a group of people going around terrerising black people and even killing them. They were known for their white outfits that covered their face. -
literacy test
This test was a very difficult reading test. In order to vote you had to pass this test that made you read very difficult writtings. This was mainly for former slaves who could not read. -
poll tax
this is a tax on voting. It was directed twords former slaves that did not have much money. This made a lot of African Americans unable to vote. -
fourteenth amendment
The fourteenth amendment stated that anyone born in the united states were citicens. It aslo gave them the equal rights. This was mainly directed at all slaves who were now free that were born in the states. -
Johnsons Impeachment
congress acused Johnson of being unconstitutional. They took a vote and he was impeached. But the vote was unfair and technicly there were not enough votes for Johnson to be impeached. -
Dunn's election
Oscar J. Dunn was elected as governer of luisana. He was an african american and thats what made his election great. He even was a former slave. -
Ulysses S. Grant becomes president
Ulysses was a know war hero at the time. He was elected becuse people thought he would end troubles with the south. But instead he looked to congress for advice. -
Grandfather clause
Many white southeners had could not read well or could not get money for the poll tax made on voting, so they made this law. The Grqandfather clause stated that anyone whose grandfather was a citizen could vote. This was against blacks because their grandfathers were most likely slaves. -
Fifteenth Amendment
The fifteenth amendment granted the right to vote to ALL citicens. It did not mater what race you were anymore. This amendment though, was not complety regonised by the south and the white southeners found was around them. -
Carpetbaggers
these are people who came down from the north to help the south. They were labeled dishonest, but most were actualy not. They got their name because they came down with suit cases made of carpet. -
segergation
this is when many places had a seperate place for blacks, right down to seperate drinking fountions. So if you were black and wanted to spend a day by the pool you would have to go to one less in quality that whites got to go to.
