    Reading at home with parents
Growing up, it was always important to my parents that they read with me every night to help with my future reading fluency.
  • Reading at school

    Reading at school
My teacher in the 2nd grade had a cozy corner to read in for those who finished all their work. I always made sure to finish my work because I wanted to sit in the cozy corner during mandatory reading time.
  • Reading in Library

    Reading in Library
To be able to check out chapter books in 2nd grade, you had to be able to read 10 pages in one of them. I knew I could, but I was always too nervous about failing.

During 3rd and 4th grade, I was homeschooled. My mother has always loved reading so of course while at home, I was reading a new chapter book each week.
  • Reading Out-Loud

    Reading Out-Loud
When I went back to public school in 5th grade, I discovered "popcorn reading." This was when I first realized, I didn't like reading out-loud.
  • Stopped Reading at Home

    Stopped Reading at Home
After I started reading out loud in class, I stopped reading at home. I associated reading with the anxiety I had.
  • Counting Paragraphs

    Counting Paragraphs
My anxiety when reading out-loud got so bad to the point where I began to count paragraphs to see which one I would read. I wouldn't even pay attention because I was too busy reading my paragraph over and over again.
  • Skimming Paragraphs

    Skimming Paragraphs
In high school, however, my anxiety with reading softened a little. I still disliked reading out loud, but I would at least read a little more than I used to. An English teacher told me that I was a good reader and had nothing to worry about, but he still taught me to skim paragraphs to help me with my work a little more.
  • Working at a Daycare

    Working at a Daycare
Once I started working at a Daycare while still in high school, I had to read out-loud all the time. The babies were always asking me to read for them, and so of course I had to read to them, in front of my coworkers and boss. But, this helped me a lot, I got so used to it that it started to not bother me as much.

I don't have much anxiety reading in front of others anymore. I have found that reading to students has greatly impacted that for me.
