My Literacy Timeline

  • Read Aloud: Llama Llama Red Pajama

Read Aloud: Llama Llama Red Pajama

At around the age of 4 years old, my teacher read one of my favorite books, Llama Llama Red Pajama, with the class. This took place at Tutor Time. My teacher went around the entire class and asked each student to read one sentence of the page. This was one of the first times I have read out loud in class.
  • AR Reading Accomplishment

    AR Reading Accomplishment

In the first grade at my school in Florida, we would have to take certain reading and writing tests for that curriculum. Part of this test was that we had to read a passage of a book and answer questions about that book. The book that I was tested on was Dr. Seuss' "Horton Hears a Who." After reading a passage of that book, I was tested on the characters and how they were feeling. I ended up getting and 100% on the test and got an award for being an Accelerated Reading Rockstar.
  • Diary of a Wimpy Kid Memory

Diary of a Wimpy Kid Memory

At around 8 years old in second grade, my teacher would take us to the school library every month to pick a book. I started reading the first book of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and finished it an entire day because I was so obsessed. Ever since then I have read every Diary of a Wimpy Kid book that was out. That year I did a project in school on the character, Greg Heffley and how my life connected to him at times. This was my first major book project and I received an A+.
  • Paper Bag Christmas

    Paper Bag Christmas

In second grade, the week before winter break in Florida, students were asked to read an inspirational quote from one of their favorites holiday books on the morning announcement video. On the day before winter break, I was asked to read the quote on the morning announcements and chose to read Paper Bag Christmas. I was very nervous that I would stumble over certain words because I was nervous that it was my first time, but I did great!
  • Reading Wonder

    Reading Wonder

The summer before 5th grade, students were supposed to read the book Wonder by R.J Palacio. I spent the whole summer reading that book and I was amazed by how inspiring it was. The main lesson of that book is to never judge anyone by their appearance, but it also taught me to find my own path and not to make decisions based on what other people think. After reading Wonder, It became one of my favorite books.
  • Reading on Stage

    Reading on Stage

In 5th grade, students were usually a part of certain events to celebrate Black History Month. At one point, I was chosen to be apart of one event and write about and dress up as one African American person. I was chosen to write about Simone Biles and dress up in her leotard. With this event, I had to go up on stage and read the passage that I wrote about the gymnast. This hadn't been my first time going on stage, but it was my first time reading to a full audience.
  • 9/10

    9/10

At the start of sixth grade, teachers read the book 9/10, a book about 9/11, to the class. Eventually my teacher stopped reading to the class and asked students to read one full chapter aloud. She then picked me to read the 10th chapter. At this point, I wasn't really afraid to read aloud to the class, but I had never read a full chapter aloud before. I was a little nervous at the beginning but when I finished my teacher was very proud of me for reading such a sensitive book out loud on my own.
  • Reading Shakespeare

    Reading Shakespeare

Towards the end of my freshman year, our English unit was based on William Shakespeare and we had to read Romeo and Juliet. Our teacher chose a character for us and we had to read their script. Most of the time, we read the modern version, but at other times we read the old english version. My character had a long script and I had to read the old English version. Looking at the script, the words made no sense and it was a bit of a struggle for me, but my teacher said I did a great job.
  • Beautiful Boy

    Beautiful Boy

For this summer reading assignment, I chose to read Beautiful Boy. I recently watched the movie and wasn't expecting the book to emotionally affect me. After getting past chapter 10, I felt really sad for the author because his son kept relapsing. In one chapter, David's son, Nic, was clean and doing well. Then at the end of the chapter, Nic relapsed again and David couldn't take it anymore. For the first time, I started crying while reading a book.
