During the time of John Jay's Treaty George Washington was currently president. Actually the only president ever had. This treaty was signed with great Britain. There were two main issues at stake. One was that the British were helping Native Americans fight back. The other was Impressing: American sailors are being kidnapped. -

Farewell Address

Washington faced two main concerns during his presidency which were political parties and how they were dangerous and how he thought we should stay nuetral (no alliances). Washington's Farewell Address was after he had already served two terms and felt that no man should have too much power and so he said good-bye to the American people; therefore, now needing an election to vote for the new president. -

The signifigance of this election was that we had never had Democratic president because the previous one's were Republcans and Thomas Jefferson was the first Democratic president. The race was very close. It was between TJ and Aaron Burr and the House of Reps picked TJ. John Adams however was a sore loser and appointed "Midnight Judges" at the last minute to keep Federalists in charge. -
Louisiana Purchase

Bought from France in 1803 fro $15 million we controlled or owned the Louisiana Purchase. getting the Purchase doubled the size of the US. Significance of this was it cause Jefferson to change from a strict to loose constructionist and in 1804 he sent Lois and Clark to explore our new territory. -
Lewis and Clark Exprdition

Thomas Jefferson, the president at the time, hoped Lewis and Clark would find a water route linking the Columbia and Missouri rivers. This link would connect the Pacific Ocean and Mississippi River giving the western land access to port trades to other water ways. -

James Madison had an opportunity to end the War of 1812 almost as soon as it began. British had repealed the Orders in Council – rules that curbed American trade with Europe – and thus one of Madison’s major reasons for war was now moot. If the British had foregone the right to impress American sailors, Madison could well have gone back to Congress with the suggestion that hostilities cease immediately; therefore, James Madison took his country to war on 1814 on Christmas Eve. -
Battle of New Orleans

The Battle of New Orleans was the last major battle of the War of 1812. On January 8, 1815 when 7,500 British soldiers marched against 4,500 U.S. troops led by General Andrew Jackson. Jackson defeated the British just 30 minutes, halting their plans to attack New Orleans and establishing himself as a national military hero. James Madison was still president. -
Adams-Onis Treaty

After months of negotiations, the Adams-Onís Treaty was signed on February 22, 1819. In the treaty, Spain gave East and West Florida to the United States, and the United States agreed to assume claims by citizens of the United States against Spain. The Senate approved the treaty a second time, and President Monroe ratified and exchanged it with Spanish authorities in February, 1821. -

All the candidates were membes of the Democrtic-Republican party. The candidates were JOhn Quincy Adams (former vp), Crawford, Andrew Jakson and Henry Clay. Jackson wins more popular votes and electoral votes than JQA, doesn't win majority; however, causing JQA to win. Mean while Henry Clay supports Adams and transfers his votes to Adams, giving him even more votes. -

Andrew Jackson was president during this time. The western push of the settlers created a problem. In 1830 the Congress of the United States passed the "Indian Removal Act." Although many Americans were against the act, most notably Tennessee Congressman Davy Crockett, it passed anyway. Causing the Indians to have to agree to leave. -

Gadsden Purchase

Meeting in Mexico City on December 30, 1853, James Gadsden, U.S. Minister to Mexico, and General Antonio López de Santa Anna, president of Mexico were the people who signed the treaty. The treaty settled the dispute over the exact location of the Mexican border west of El Paso, Texas, giving the U.S. claim of land in what is now southern New Mexico and Arizona. It cost $10 million and President Polk was in office during this time. -
