The first Europeans arrived nearly 50 years before other Europeans did.
  • Civil War

A civil war appears to have occurred on the island between 1770 and 1774, both years in which Europeans visited Rapa Nui. In 1774, it appeared to have a much smaller population than in 1770, and some of the Moai were overthrown or discarded.
