- 1854 – The British East India Company applied the Doctrine of Lapse, rejecting Damodar Rao’s claim to the throne and annexing Jhansi.
- 1857 – The First War of Indian Independence began, and Rani Lakshmibai prepared for battle.

Revolt of 1857 & Battle for Jhansi
- March 1858 – British forces led by Sir Hugh Rose attacked Jhansi.
- April 1858 – After fierce resistance, she fled to Kalpi with her troops.
- May 1858 – Joined forces with Tantia Tope and recaptured Gwalior from the British.
- 17 June 1858 – Engaged in battle at Kota-ki-Serai, near Gwalior, and was mortally wounded. 5.18 June 1858 – Died in battle; her loyal followers cremated her to prevent the British from capturing her body.
