film time
There were 162 halls and other venues screening in Wales in 1910 and by 1920 the number had soared to 252. The film industry was exploding all around. Many places started showing it. -
1920 film
The 1920's were the peak and, ironically, the swansong years of silent cinema - which reached its zenith with the cinematic masterpieces of directors such as von Sternberg, von Stroheim, Murnau, Eisenstein and Gance, and in Hollywood the still incomparable comedies of Chaplin, Keaton and Harold Lloyd. -
1940
Wales and its people appeared more frequently in British cinema in the 1940s, but the filmmakers were still almost invariably English or Americans whose work told us as much about their preconceptions (or prejudices) than about life as experienced by most of the Welsh population. -
1950
A trio of Welsh screen stars emerged in the 1950s to help us forget the dearth of imagery of Wales and its people in mainstream cinema - and the lamentable lack of Indigenous productions. -
1960
For the first time a Welsh filmmaker carried off a Best Director prize at the Hollywood Oscars - and Jack Howells, from Abertysswg in the Rhymney Valley is still alone in achieving the feat. -
1970
The 1970s, seen from today's vantage point, might be seen to mark the first modern decade of genuine Welsh production. -
1980
The 1980s, in retrospect, seem to have been a time of huge optimism for film in Wales, with S4C's efforts to encourage Welsh filmmaking in mid-decade paying striking dividends. -
1990
The 1990s ushered in a strong dose of reality, with increasing acceptance that a fertile period of Welsh features was not yet on the horizon, but there was still much evidence of burgeoning talent waiting in the wings for opportunities. -
2000
Two compelling debut features from Wales have attracted international attention in the century's first decade. -
