Audion Tube
Lee De Forest created the Audion Tube. The Audion is a vacuum tube that amplified signals. Is is widly believed that Canadian inventor, Reginald Fessenden, actually came up with the idea, but Fessenden didn't seem to make it into the histoy book for that invention. -
Radio impact on ships
The radio had a big impact on ships because ships were able to send radio signals back to land letting them their progress. The radio helped save many lives on the Titanic because the captian of the ship was able to radio land to get help. Without the radio everyone would've died. -
Radio Stations
Radio invented in 1895, 25 years later in 1920 now has a radio station started by Frank Conrad. 8XK the first radio station played music by placing a microphone up to a phonograph. The radio station now called KDKA is still around today 90 years later. -
Uncle Charlie
Uncle charlie was a term used for personal radio stations. This made to where anyone with the money and equiptment could run their own radio stations from home. Everyone wanted to have their own station which caused too many radio station at once. -
Dawn of Advertising
Radio and TV would not be what it is with out commercials. In 1922 WEAF aired a 10 minute commercial or toll broadcast for an apartment complex charging $50. This is how radio stations made their money. -
FRC
The FRC the Federal Radio Commisson later changed to FCC Federal Communication Commisson was established in 1927. It was created because Uncle Charle was too popular and it help organize the licensibg of tranmitters. The FRC also assigned radio station frequncies, call lettersm and power limits. -
Call Letters
Radio Stations had to have call letters because to identify themselves from other radio station from across the country. W is east of the Mississippi River. K is West of the Mississippi River. -
Golden Era of Radio
The Golden Era is when radio was at its finest, during the 30's and the 40's. Radio was so popular because during the Great Depression at this time, people would used the radio as a distraction. The radio an esape of the people at that time. -
Radio Shows to TV
Tv makes and appearance in the 1930's. At first the public was not big fans of television because the actors used on tv were not what they pictured them to look like. From listening to shows on the radio they already had their own mental picture. Tv soon became more popular espeiclly for advertisment agencies becasue now instead of just telling the public about their product they were now able to show them. Due to the increase in the popularity of the tv the radio lost alot of money. -
Music to the Radio
Music saved the radio. When music makes an appearance on the radio the public loved it. Music on the radio became so popular because the only place to listen to music would be on a jukebox, records or live shows. Now you can listen to radio in your car, in your house, any where there wsa a radio. -
Radio Progession
Major Edwin Armstrong invented the FM transmitter which made a stronger signal and higher quality sound. All listeners were forced to buy new radio sets. Talk was on AM and music was on FM. -
The First Grammy Awards
The first Grammy awards was created in 1959. This was an opportunity fir the media to create a chance to credit all of the hard work from the musicians popular around the world. The Grammys is still to this day a very successful awards. -
Woodstock
Woodstock was a three day outdoor rock festival popular across the United States. Artists like Jimmy Hendricks, Janet Jackson and the Grateful Dead performwd at this legendary festival. This festival was held White Lake, New York. -
MTV
MTV (Music Television) was founded in 1981 by Tom Frestman and Robert Pittman. MTV is television network just for the music amd music videos targeted for the young adults. Helped promote records for many artists including the Beatles.
