Radio History

  • Discovery

    Discovery
In 1864, electromagnetic waves that could be broadcasted into space were discovered. These waves could be transmitted into radio waves which could be used as a form of communication.an example of this, is the telegraph.Created by an Italian inventor, wires for the telegraph could be ran through water, underground, and through railroad tracks.
  • The Radio

    The Radio
The word radio has been used to describe several phases:electromagnetic waves and experimentation, wireless communication and technical development;and radio broadcasting and commercialization.James Clerk Maxwell, presented a presentation proposing a theory that electromagnetism that showed light and other energies were electromagnetism propagating in free space. In 1886-88,Heinrich Rudolph Hertz conducted experiments that proved Maxwell's electromagnetic waves were real.
  • Sparks

    Sparks
In 1878,David E. Hughes saw that sparks could be heard in a telephone receiver when experimenting with his carbon microphone. He continued to evaluate his microphone until it eventually could reach 100 yards. He demonstrated this to the Royal Society but was waved off as an induction.
  • Edison

    Edison
Thomas Edison found this electromagnetic discovery while experimenting with the telegraph at Menlo Park.He noticed an explained transmission within his telegraph and questioned it.He called it the etheric force, which he would later patent.
  • Experimentation

    Experimentation
After Hertzian waves were discovered, many scientists experimented with this electromagnetic radiation.A theory was created that radio waves could were the same as light but on a different frequency, which led many scientists to believe that Hertzian waves could be used as an optical transmission.Nikola Tesla,a Serbian American scientist, believed this to be relatively useless since it could only go to the line of sight.
  • Communication

    Communication
In 1894,Italian inventor,Guglielmo Marconi, created the first complete and functioning, wireless telegraph.Marconi showed this to military and marine communications. He created a company for development and propagation of radio communication services and equipment.
  • The 20th Century

    The 20th Century
Toward the beginning of the 20th century, the Slaby-Arco wireless system was created by Adolf Slaby and Georg von Arco.By 1901,Marconi conducted the first experimental radio communications. In 1904,The U.S. Patent Office decided to give Marconi a patent for the invention of the radio, possibly influenced by his financial backers,Thomas Edison and Andrew Carnegie.
  • The First Broadcast

    The First Broadcast
Another advancement, the vacuum tube detector, was created by Westinghouse engineers. On Christmas Eve of 1906,Reginald Fessenden used a rotary spark transmitter for the first ever radio broadcast in Bluff-Brant Rock,Massachusetts.Ships at sea were able to hear him play O Holy Night on the violin and reading a passage from the Bible.
  • Radio Factory

    Radio Factory
In June 1912,Marconi opened the first ever, purpose built radio factory at New Street Works in Chelmsford,England. The first radio news broadcast August 31,1920 by station 8MK in Detroit,Michigan, now known as WWJ.That same month 2ADD(now WRUC),aired the first public entertainment broadcast in the U.S.
  • Resistance

    Resistance
The introduction of music into the radio world was met with various resistance. Many people believed that the radio should only be for communication.Even a station in New York was shut down due to broadcasting music.
  • Enter Music

    Enter Music
A college radio station in San Jose is said to have broadcasted music between 1912 and 1917,but not daily.During WWI,many amateur stations were cut off but 1XE was broadcasting music in 1919,shortly after the war.Eventually, more of these stations began to pop up.
  • Commercial Radio Stations

    Commercial Radio Stations
KDKA in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania,is most commonly known as the first commercial radio station. After it got its license,it went on air as the first US licensed commercial broadcasting station on Novemeber 2,1920.Technically,the station was one of several extant stations with 'limited commercial' licenses.
  • Acceptance of The Music

    Acceptance of The Music
Music wasn't the only thing broadcasted on the radio.News, sports, and other events were often broadcasted before music was.Eventually,AT&T saw the future of music on the radio and placed the first radio ad on the air in 1922.
  • FM Start

    FM Start
The FM radio uses frequency modulation of the radio wave to reduce static and interference from its surroundings.By 1937,W1XOJ,the first experimental station, was granted a construction permit by the FCC.In the U.S.,the FM system was designated by the FCC to transmit and receive television sound.
  • Voice Transmission

    Voice Transmission
In 1900,Brazilian priest Roberto Landell de Moura, sent the first wireless voice transmission. He conducted his first public experiment June 3,1990,in front of journalists and the Consul of Great Britain.A year after he received his first patent for it by the Brazilian government.
