Marconi and the first radio signal
Marconi was an Italian inventor who is credited to have sent and have recieved the first radio signal in 1895. It is not for sure if he was the very first one but he was the first to put himself out there. -
First Atlantic Wireless Transmission
On December 12, 1901 Marconi sent the first radio transmission across the Atlantic Ocean. It traveled 2,000 miles from England to Canada. -
The Audion Tube
Lee De Forest either created or borrowed the idea of the audion tube in 1906. The audion tube helps to amplify sounds. It is believed that a Canadian inventor, Reginald Fessenden was the one who actually came up with the idea but he didn't get into the history. -
The Radio Act of 1912
The Radio Act of 1912 required all land radio stations and ship stations to be staffed 24/7. -
RCA founded
The shortwave radio is developed and also RCA is founded. RCA stands for Radio Corporation of America -
Radio Station- KDKA
In 1920, 8XK later renamed KDKA, was the first commerical radio station, in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. It is in AM. -
First US Presidental Election Broadcasted
November 2, 1920 first US presidental election was broadcasted on KDKA. The winner was annouced and it was former President Warren G. Harding. -
First Radio Commercial
In 1922, WEAF aired a ten min. commercial that was an ad for an apartment complex. They charged $50 for ten min. Now commercials can range all the way up to millions of dollars. -
The FRC
SIince the Uncle Charlie radio stations would invade the space of real radio stations, that people would pay to have their commercials aired, the FRC had to be established in order to control and remove Uncle Charlie radio stations -

National Public Radio which is a private, non-commercial network that is devoted to information and news is founded. -

Michael Jackson released his award winning album Thriller. It won mulitple Grammys including Album of the Year. It produced chart topping hits, such as "Billie Jean" and "Beat It". -

The rise of online music stations arose around the 2000. These are competitors for local, traditional radio stations. Of course the real deal radio stations are not going anywhere, however many people enjoy the accessable pandora, spotify, itunes etc. -
XM first sattelite
XM Sattelite services launch, first in San Diego, then in Dallas/Fort Worth, and then eventually across the United States. You have to pay in order to listen to XM channels.
