Inventor of Radio
Marconi was the inventor of radio. He sent and received the first radio signals. The signals weren't exactly music or text messages but it could have been just a sound. Some people don't believe he was the first but he told the right people that he did so that's what we believe today. -
Audion Tube
The idea was created by Lee De Forest. It was a vacuum that amplifies signals. People believe that Reginald Fessenden came up with the idea but didn't make it into history books. -
Radio Stations
First station 8XK later named KDKA. This started by a man named Frank Conrad. The radio stations is still running today in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. -
Commercial impact
Wear aired a ten minute commercial for an apartment complex that costed $50. Commercials is where a lot of money from the radio comes from. The business pays for every 30 seconds to a minute to be aired on a radio station however many times it plays. -
Call Letters
Call letters were switched over to where if a radio station was East of the Mississippi River it would start with a W. If a station was West of the Mississippi River it would start with a K. The call letters help distinguish the different stations in a particular area. -
Uncle Charlie
Personal Radio stations came about during the 1920's. The FRC was established to organize licensing for transmitters and assigning radio station frequencies, call letters, and power limits. Uncle Charlie's where becoming too popular so there needed to be a restriction on how personal radio stations could come about. -
Golden Era
Radio provided an escape for people because during that time was the start of the Great Depression. Radio offered shows such as Amos n Abdy, Superman, Gunsmoke, etc. It was known as a family medium, meaning the whole family could watch and enjoy. -
TV's Appearance
TV blew up during that time. Advertisers favored TV more than they did radio. That's how they began to lose money and need a new idea which is music.
