His purpose of writing this speech was to try to give African-Americans freedom and the equality they deserve. He read this speech in The March of Washington. -
Civil Rights Act
With Martin Luther King looking on, President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1954, which outlaws segregation in employment, public education, and public facilities. -
Black-white wealth gap
White families have 8 eight times the wealth of the average nonwhite family. Today 71% of whites own their own home, compared to 44% of African Americans. Black and Latino mortgage applicants are 60% more likely to be turned down. -
Barack Obama Elected
Barack Obama was elected as the U.S. President. This was a big milestone because he was the first black African-American president.
