Birth
Rachel was born in Springdale, Pennsylvannia. Her family lived on her family's 65 acre farm. Rachel has always been shy, never making friends, so she spent time with the farms animals and writing. In this photo is Rachel with her dog Candy. -
Published Story
Rachel knew that she had always wanted to be a writer for as long as she could remember. When she was only 11 she was honored to have her story in published in St. Nicholas Magizene. Her story was named Flying Dreams. -
College
Rachel's mother Maria sold many things and took on extra piano lessons tobe able to send Rachel to college. When they earned enough money Rachel went off in a borrowed Model T and headed off to Pennslvania Collge for Women. She started taking writing classes but one year later a biology class taught by lively Miss Mary Scott made Rachel change her studies to biology. -

Rachel went first to Pennslyvania College for Women. She then swithched her studies from writing to biology. -
Job
Rachel got out of college and immedietly needed a jod to support her family. But there was a problem, no one wanted to hire a women biologist. Eventually she got a job fixing boring news scripts. But she ended up landing a job on the Bureau of Fisheries one of only two professionnal women on staff. -
Adopts Child
At age 50 Rachel's niece died so she adopted her son Roger Christie. They loved exploring the woods and tidal pools at her summer cottage in Maine. This is a picture with Roger in it. -

Working on Silent Spring
Even when bedridden she was with cancer she was determined to show the world what bad things were going on, and how we could get really hurt and the planet would suffer as well. -
Silent Spring
Rachel started a difficult new project in 1958. She noticed how heavy sprayings of chemicals were done routinely to kill insects. then Rachel remembered how she had read about studies of declining bird populations across the country. She found out that the chemicals were to blame.The date above is when she published her book Silent Spring. -
Death
Breast Cancer killed Rachel Carson on April 14th, 1964. She died at a young age of 56. Rachel was buried at Parklawn Memeorial Park and Menorah Gardens in Rockville, Maryland. -
Stamp
They made a Rachel Carson stamp on May 28th, 1981. It was part of a collection of Planet Patriots. They are printed by
the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, they only come in green. You can by them online at Mystic Stamp Company.
