    Alexandrina Victoria was born in Kensington Palace in London, England. She was the only child of Edward, Duke of Kent and Marie Louis Victoria. When Victoria was very young her father died, making her the heir to the throne.

    The Analytical Engine is an early form of a calculator. It was invented by the English mathematician Charles Babbage. The machine could calculate and print mathematical tables. This is important because today calculators are used worldwide and we would not have them if this hadn't been invented.

    Victoria Takes Over the Throne
    Victoria became Queen at age 18 after the death of her uncle, William IV because he had no surviving children of his own. Victoria found out she was Queen of England in the middle of the night, but was ready to perform her duties right away. She wasted no time setting up meetings and deciding her royal court. This event is significant because this is the first time she had been in charge of the country on her own. Even at her young age she wasn't afraid.

    Victoria opened her first session of Parliament in1837. This was important because it was the first time she performed this routine as Queen of England. Although as Queen Victoria didn't have much political power, she was a cultural symbol and the ceremonies in which she participated were important.

    Coronation
    Even though Victoria had been Queen for over a year, her coronation took place in the summer of 1838. The Coronation was very important to England because they got to see their Queen oficially made royalty. After her coronation Victoria lived in Buckingham Palace.

    The Great Potato Famine began in 1845 and lasted until 1849. The famine was caused when the potatoes were diseased and died. Ireland depended heavily on potatoes and without them many poeple starved, died, or left the country.

    After a civil war in India, there was no leader and India was added into the British Empire. Victoria now controlled India as well as other parts of Great Britain. This is significant because during the time of Victoria's reign the British Empire greatly expanded so that "the sun never sets on the British Empire".

    Albert died of typhoid at the age of 42. He was very important to the Queen. Albert and Victoria are now buried next to each other. After his death Victoria slipped into a short depression.

  • Golden Jubilee

    The Golden Jubilee celebrated the 50 years since Victoria's succession to the crown. To celebrate they had a large banquet, she was part of a parade, and then there was a service at Westminster Abbey. The Queen was very popular and her jubilee was a big celebration by the people of the nation. This is significant because it marked a big milestone in the queen's life.

    On this day, Victoria broke the English, Scottish, and British record for longest reiging monarch. The title was previously held by Victoria's grandfather Gearge III. Instead of celebrating at the time she requested that all ceremonies wait until the next year, to go along with her diamond jubilee. This event is successful because she made history as the longest reigning King or Queen,.

    In 1901, oil drilling was introduced to the Persian Gulf. The oil that they find can be used in many ways. THe economy of the countries near the Persian Gulf have benefited greatly from this activity. This is significant because today many countries depend on the Persian Gulf as their main source for oil.

  • VIctoria Dies

    Victoria died at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight and was buried in Windsor next to her husband. Victoria is the longust ruler of England, her reign lasting 64 years. Queen Victoria was a successful Queen who brougght respect and a good reputation back to the English monarchy. After her death the crown was passed to her son Albert Edward, Prince of Wales. He became King Edward VII.
