    Benjamin Franklin founds a private academy
    In 1749 Benjamin Franklin founds a private academy to teach students various subjects from Latin - Arithmetic. This leads to several other academies being formed.
  • First Public Secondary School Opened

    First Public Secondary School Opened
    First public school founded/funded by the government opens in Boston. Because this wasn't a private academy, the curriculum was designated by the government.

  • Horace Mann elected as secretary of Mass. Board of Education

    Horace Mann elected as secretary of Mass. Board of Education
    Horace Mann (the Father of Common School) is elected into the newly formed Massachusetts Board of Education in 1837. His view was that school should be paid for by the public and made available to all children no matter their background.

    In 1837 the African Institute (Cheyney University) opens as the first source of higher education for African Americans.

    The Committee of Ten formed to make a more standardized school curriculum. The committee helped to create the standard twelve year system the United States currently has in place.

  • All States Have Compulsory Education Law

    All States Have Compulsory Education Law
    By 1929 all states finally a law in place making attendance in school mandatory (Alaska becomes the last state to pass a law). This provided the opportunity to focus on other legislative measures that needed to be put in place for the education system.

    The parents of Linda Brown file a lawsuit to allow their daughter to attend a close school rather than one further away from their home due to segregation. Supreme Court rules in favor of Brown stating segregation is unconstitutional.

    Civil Rights Act
    In 1964 the Civil Rights Act is passed which among other items strengthened the prohibition against discriminatory acts againts other due to race, sex or nationality.

    Equal Educational Opportunities Act
    The EEOA is passed in 1974 saying that no one should be denied education or segregated based on race color or sex, and that those who do not have an understanding of the English language would be provided a program and utilities to learn.

    No Child Left Behind Act
    The No Child Left Behind Act is signed by President Bush. The act focused on making schools accountable for student performance and aimed to show marked improvement in scores by 2013.

  • 33 States already granted waivers for No Child Left Behind

    33 States already granted waivers for No Child Left Behind
    By August of 2012 32 states + Washington DC were already granted waivers to the requirements for No Child Left Behind. In place of meeting requirements states receiving waivers must come up with new plans for the education agenda.
