  • Old Deluder Satan Act

    An act that required towns of 50 or more families to have a primary school and towns of 100 or more familes have a Latin teacher so the brighter young men could go to Harvard, where they would be educated for the ministry. This was done because the people back in that time thought that illiterate people were easy targets for Satan.
  • Normal Schools

    Named after Ecole Normale, the first Normal School was established in France, which was training for elementary teachers. The first Normal School in America was established in 1839 in Lexington, Massachusetts.
  • Board of Education

    The Massachusetts state legislature created the first ever Board of Education and appointed Horace Mann to be the secretary to the board.
  • Brown vs Board of Education

    With this court case being in favor of Brown, it allowed his African American daughter to attend a white school, and in turn, lead to the end of school segregation.
  • Title IX

    This title said that no one in the US should be excluded from participation, denied benefits, or be discriminated against for their gender. This title basically evened up the playing field for women in education.
