A band called the Psychedelic Rangers formed in Los Angeles. This is the first known instance of a rock'n'roll band referring to themselves as "psychedelic". -

The BEATLES record "Norwegian Wood", which contains elements close to psychedelia. At least two of the band members had taken LSD at this point. The track appears on "Rubber Soul", released in December. -

Woodstock Festival
The Woodstock Music and Art Fair, had an estimated crowd of 450,000. The event featured everyone from Jimi Hendrix and Joe Cocker, to the Who. -

Jimi Hendrix's unorthodox Woodstock performance of America's National Anthem, "The Star-Spangled Banner", caused controversy, as it was thought to be using elements of the Veietnam war, people got up and left during his performance. This performance was also not up to Hendrix's usual energetic standard. -
