  • Jamestown was Founded

    Jamestown was Founded
    A group made up of maybe 100 men discovered an area and named it Jamestown. It was one of the first permanent English settlements that survived for a long time, but soon died out.

    The House of Burgesses was the first form of government in Jamestown, VA. People over 17 and owned land were allowed to be in it. They would make laws and such.

    People were tired of the King. So they then took a boat and landed on present-day Massachussets. They settled there and built houses. Also, they created self-government.

    It was a war between French and the British with the Indians on the French side. France lost to British and gained a lot of land but a lot more conflict with Native Americans. It also caused huge amounts of debt.

    Lots of important papers had to have certified stamps in order to be used. It caused lots of tension. It then led to riots and the destruction of things. Civil disobedience. "No taxation without representation"

    Boston Massacre
    People were fussing at the British, throwing bricks and such at them. They were very irritated by this. The crowd then taunted them and told them to shoot. They did what they asked and killed Chrispus Attucks and three others.

    The civilians were sick and tired of the tax on tea. So they decided to revolt and take over the ships at the Boston port. 342 tea chests were dumped into the ocean.

    The king decided to close the Boston port until all the tea was paid for. Also, Massachusetts was placed udner military law and British officers arrested incoloniesgo back to England for trial. The quartering act was enacted.

    It was a huge win for the colonies. The British retreated after the battle. We were outnumbered but managed to defeat them. We had minuteman waiting for a moments notice to warn us of the British.

    The Declaration of Independence was written to show that England cannot take us over and that we have a reason to revolt. It listed a bunch of grievances that England did. It was then signed in 1776.

    It was a major turning point in war. We had support from France and Spain. (later on) Burhoyne was outnumbered three to one. They surrendered to Americans.

    On 1777 the Articles of Confederation were created in order to create a united government. It had a postal system and it was set up on an economic system. It led to many events. It was the first consitution of the United States.

    Last major battle of the war. British were cut off by land and Cornwallis was fooled into thinking we had a Navy coming.

    The treaty made Great Britain recognize American Independence. The war was now over. (in some areas)

    Massachusetts' farmers and war veterans attack a courthouse trying to save their farms. The army had no power to solve this problem. This is what proved that the Articles of Confederation doesn't work.

    On May 5th, 55 delegates from 12 states went to meet up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They wanted to revise the Articles of Confederation due to Shay's Rebellion.

    This was a letter written by Washington for the people of the United Sates. He told them to avoid political parties, which they didn't, and debt.

    Marbury was dened his judge commission. The head judge then decides that Marbury was right but the Supreme Court can't make the president give him the commission papers. They realize it's unconstitutional and make Judicial Review.

    Land purchased from Napoleon during the French Revolution. He was in need of money to fund his war. We just wanted one small portion, but Napoleon offered more than that. Jefferson bought the land for a very good price. Jefferson sent Lewis to explore the unknown land.

    British was supplying Indians with guns and led to small wars. A lot of Indians died. We were tired of it and fought the British. The British burnt down the White House but died of a tornado. It was a pointless war. It was a stalemate.
