13th Amendment
The 13nth amendment declared that nobody can be submitted to slavery. This could be applied when supporting a union because working in poor conditions with a small pay is almost like slavery. -
National Labor Union
The National labor union was the first labor union in the states that started a trend of unions such as the KOL and the AFL. The goal of the Union was to reduce work ours down to 8 hours a day . -
Knights of Labor (KOL)
the KOL where a secret group of tailors that unionize in order to improve working conditions. However the group fell apart after the members couldn't come to agreements and because the group became violent. -
The first labor day
The very first Labor day was hosted by The Unions in September, 8 1882. A year later the second Labor day was celebrated at the same date next year. -
American Federation of Labor
The american Federation of labor is a Union made from the Knights of Labor. The AFL had a major disadvantage that was only skilled workers where allowed to join the Union. -
Pull Man Strike
The pull man strike was a nation wide strike organized by railroad workers that unfortunately failed. However they did get recognition and marked a turning point for labor laws. -
Shirtwaist Factory fire
The Shirtwaist factory was one of the deadliest industry fire in history. This was a clear change that work spaces needed to be safer for the workers with better condition and safety features. -
The Wagner Act
The Wagner act i a very important piece of labor history. This document is so important because it established the right for employees to star unions to improve their work environment. The employees had the safety of joining a Union without the fear of getting fired. -
Taft-Hartley act
The Taft-Hartley act was the first major revision to the Wagner act that changed a couple of things. The new act gave the right to refuse to join a Union if the wanted. It also allowed the employers to require the employees to join a union. -
Fair Labor Standards Act
The fair Labor standards act was the standard that all employers had to follow and most of what we still follow till the date. The act established the minimum wage that was $7.25 at the time, overtime, and the youth employment.
