    Written by Ida B. Wells, it shined a light on the awful racism and violence that still existed in her country. Many Northerners did not know about the extent of the racism that still gripped their nation.

    A large strike from steel and iron workers was a result of the possibilities of already low wages going down even lower. Many people were killed in a battle between guards and the strikers in a fight with guns. It got its name because it happened in Homestead PA.

  • Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire

    Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire
    A tragic fire started in a shirtwaist factory where many women worked. One of the escapes was locked and the fire escape collapsed under the weight of frantic workers. The fire ladders weren't tall enough to reach high windows. People jumped from windows and too many people died from the height of the jump or from burning to death. It led to better working conditions and was a true tragedy.

    Washington, D.C. Suffrage parade
    It was the first women's suffragist parade in Washington DC. Ines Milholland Boissevain rode a white horse in a white cape and dress at the front. It occurred one day before President Woodrow Wilson's inauguration for extra publicity. Black people were strongly encouraged not to come and if they did they were made to stay in the back. Ida B Wells refused to leave or stay in the back and instead marched with the other women upfront.

    The first protest to picket the white house. They got their name because of their silent way of protesting. They were peaceful but many women were (wrongly) arrested for obstructing the sidewalk and were horribly abused in custody.
