Axis Powers Formed
Germany, Italy, and japan sign tripartite pact, officially becoming the axis powers. This alliance was formed to keep the US out of war. If they attack one country in the axis they deal with all countries. -
Relection for presidency
FDR broke the tradition that President Washington started and decided to run again for president for a 3rd term. His opponent agreed with his campaign and his people went with FDR because they knew him best. -
Lend-Lease Act
Congress passed the Lend-Lease Act after FDR suggested it. FDR suggested this because Britain ran out of money. This plan would allow the president to lend out arms to countries that were in need of them. -
Hitler breaks Agreement to Stalin
Hitler invaded the Soviet Union after he and Stalin made an agreement in 1939. FDR started to send Lend-lease supplies to the Soviet Union some Americans were opposed to this. -
Signing of the Atlantic Charter
FDR and Churchill secretly meet met aboard the USS Augusta to discuss the out come of the war, they sign together the Atlantic Charter a joint declaration of war goals. The goals include: freedom of the seas, collective security, economic cooperation, disarmament, and self-determination. The United States is further choosing to support the allies instead of the axis powers. -
German Submarine Fired on The U.S. Destroyer
On this day the German submarines fired on the U.S. destroyer Greer on the Atlantic Ocean. The U.S. became involved because FDR ordered navy commanders to have the navy shoot the German Submarines on sight. -
Pearl Harbor.
FDR received a decoded message that instructed Japan’s peace envoy to reject all American peace proposals. After FDR received this he said “This means war” That next morning Japan attacked Pear Harbor in Hawaii this was the U.S largest navel base.
