The Beach Boys, a band traditionally considered to be a "Pop" band released the song "Good Vibrations" which employed a foreign instrument called a Theremin and was dubbed at the time a "Pocket Symphony" for its innovative sound. Thus bean the Progressive or "Prog" Rock subgenre. -
Lonely Hearts
The release of several albums in the following year signaled a change in the realm of rock music where Bands where starting to experiment more with their sounds, The Beatles "Sargent Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" is a foremost example of this. -
Emerson meets Palmer
"Keith Emerson and Greg Lake met in December 1969 when Emerson's then band The Nice and Lake's band King Crimson co-headlined a series of concerts at the Fillmore West in San Francisco." the two, along with drummer Greg Lake, went onto what is widely considered one of the greatest prog rock groups of all time, Emerson, Lake and Palmer. -

Dark Side of the Moon
Pink Floyd released The Dark Side of the Moon in the spring of 1973. "The Dark Side of the Moon was an immediate success; it topped the Billboard Top LPs & Tapes chart for a week and remained in the chart for 741 weeks from 1973 to 1988. With an estimated 45 million copies sold, it is Pink Floyd's most commercially successful album and one of the best-selling worldwide." thus cementing their place in the Prog Rock list of greats. -
The Exorcist
The cult classic "The Exorcist" further expanded the audience of Prog Rock by it's use of a cut of Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" as the chilling soundtrack to this classic horror film. -
Reborn: Asia
The the end of the 70's saw a decline in the genre, the early 80's saw the genre reborn beginning with the formation of the supergroup, Asia and the release of their first self titled album.
