The Penn School became the Penn Normal Agricultural and Industrial School due to adopting a industrial arts curriculum. -
Civil Rights Movement
Penn School was the only place in South Carolina that allowed inter racial groups to discuss. For example, Martin Luther King Jr. and Peace Corps went there to have conferences. -
National Landmark
Penn school got reconigized to become a National Historic Landmark District. One of only 4 in South Carolina, and the only one with African American historic district. -
Health and Library Services
Penn Center now is interacting with community to create mult-million dollar health complexes and libraries that is leased or donated by the center. -
Gullah Geechee Culture
Congress passed legislation to establish the first Gullah Geechee Cultural heritage corridor. THis was to honor and preserve the Gullah Geechee culture.
