Progress Map

  • Week 1

Week 1: Introduction to the unit and brief. Discussion of the different types of dissertations that I can do. Started to think of what my question could potentially be. Also researched into what a dissertation actually is and what I have to include and do in my own dissertation to make it the best possible dissertation I can make.
  • Week 2

Week 2: This week we discussed what our field was so I showed a piece of work that I have completed whilst being at Ravensbourne.
I came up with some ideas I could potentially do to start my dissertation
  • Week 3

This week we looked on more on secondary research that we can use for our dissertation. I also narrowed down my ideas into two potential ideas for my dissertation
  • Progress Map

Started to work on my progress map so I could plan ahead and make a schedule of what work I need to do and when I need to do it by
  • Week 4

This week we discussed what makes a good lead question. This was really helpful as I was struggling to come up with a question in my head. We also looked at some texts which was also very helpful in understanding what is good and bad when it comes to writing.
  • Research

I have come up with my working title, Is autism represented accurately in film, and I'm now starting to conduct my secondary research into my question. This is by looking at website articles and potential movies that I can analyse for my dissertation.
  • Week 5

This was the formative point, so I proposed my question to my tutor and my classmates. The feedback I got was good and very constructive, and I have taken all of this information in to start my research review and start putting my ideas into practice.
  • Priorties

Due to a fast approaching deadline on my course, for the next week this took priority over the diss prep work so that I could finish the work on time.
  • Back to Diss Prep

Now with my deadline for my other project passed, I have got back on to my diss prep work. I finished off my Proposal Overview, Research Review and Research strategy through the week to make sure that I was ahead of schedule for the deadline on June 3rd.
  • Week 5

I showed my tutor a draft submission of my work, and with their feedback I made sure my work was to the best of standards. Feedback from the tutor and peers in my focus groups really helped me to focus on primary research, as I was struggling for an idea to help me with my primary research. We also had a talk with an ex student about his dissertation process which was really helpful.
  • Deadline Day!

I have finished off my ethics checklist and have handed in my submission. Now this has been handed in I want to rent out some books that I believe will be useful for my dissertation to start reading over the summer.
  • Week 6

Starting to read the books about savant syndrome and misrepresentation in film so that I can gauge an understanding of what it properly is and contextualise this for my dissertation.
  • Week 6

Whilst reading the books I also started to watch Rain Man, starting to analyse the performance by Dustin Hoffman and see if his performance is a true representation of Autism and Savant Syndrome
  • Holiday

For the next week I will be on holiday so I will not be doing any work during this week.
  • Week 7

Now that I'm back from my holiday I will continue into my research on representation. I will also continue to watch Rain Man and finish reading the books that I want to read.
  • Week 8

I will now begin to watch The Big Bang Theory and specifically at Sheldon Coopers character to see if there is any similarities between this and Rain man.
  • Holiday

Going on family holiday during this week so will not be doing any work during this week
  • Week 9

Now I'm back from holiday I will be continuing on with my research.
  • A-Typical

I will start to watch Atypical on Netflix, which is one of the latest representations of autism on TV.
  • Prepping for Interview

I will now be conducting research into who I would like to interview. I will be researching into potential candidates that can fit into what I want to interview them about.
  • Research into what makes good interview questions

I will now be conducting some research into what makes good interview questions as interviewing people isn't something I'm really confident with.
  • Preparing Interview Questions

Now that I have some research into what makes good interview questions, I will now begin preparing the final interview questions that I want to ask my interviewee.
  • Rain Man Book

Whilst preparing for my interview I will start to read the Rain Man book to see if it goes into anymore detail about Raymond Babbitt and the comparisons between the book and film.
  • Contact Potential Interviewees

I will now start to contact potential interviewees organising a date to conduct the interview.
  • Final Touches Before Going Back To Uni

Now with all the research that I have gathered over the summer, I will try to see if it connects the dots to the written research I carried out. Prepare myself so that I'm ready to start writing my dissertation in October when I go back to uni
