    on July 28th, Canada entered the first world war. this meant independence for Canada and it was their time to show how they can unite into one nation and be one of the bravest units. this obviously showed a period of progress
  • Conscription

    on May 18th, 1917, prime minister Robert Borden implemented conscription to help fight the war. this was a decline because french Canadians did not think it was their place to fight in Britain's war which created a divide in Canada between french Canadians.
  • woman Given Suffrage

    on September 20th, 1917, women were given the right to vote. this is progress because it made a break in sexism which was very present at that time period
  • Halifax Explosion

    on December 6th, the French ship Mont Blanc was carrying munitions and it collided with a Belgian relief ship on the coast of Halifax. this was declined because it was the largest explosion before the atomic bomb and it killed more than 1,600 people and injured 9,000.
  • Spanish flu

    the first outbreak of the Spanish flu in Canada was in Halifax on September 8th, 1918 when a ship from Europe with servicemen on board arrived in Canada. this was decline because it nearly killed 50,000 people just in Canada.
  • The Winnipeg General strike

    On May 15th, negotiations had gone bad with union leaders and management in construction and metal workers. this lead to a strike where 30,000 workers walked out of their jobs and even employees in the public sector like policemen had walked off. this was a sign of decline because on June 22nd, the Royal northwest intervened and they trampled 30 people and even killed one of them
  • Canada signs treaty of Versailles

    on June 28, 1919, Canadian prime minister Robert Borden sent delegates to Paris to represent Canada as a separate country. this was a sign of progress because for once, Canada proved its independence in front of other world leaders.
  • discovery of Insulin

    in the spring of 1921, Fedrick Banting discovered insulin at the University of Toronto which prevented diabetes. this is progress because we still use insulin to this day and it has helped millions of people.
  • Pier 21 Opens

    the Gateway to Canada opens also known as pier 21 on March 28, 1928. an immigration depot on the harbourfront of Halifax opens welcoming more than a million immigrants in the next 30 years. this is progress because a lot of jobs were filled up and new business were opened.
  • Stock Market Crash

    on October 24, 1929, the American stock market crashes leading to years of economical depression. this is a decline for Canada and was for the next decade because the stock market crash also damaged Canada's economy.
