Axis Powers formed
To become the axis power, Italy, Japan and Germany signed the Tripartite Pact. The hope was that a Japan-Axis alliance would hold America back from interfering in Europe. -
FDR's 3rd term
Roosevelt decided torun for a third term and break the tradition of 2 terms. His opponent agreed with his policy of aiding Britain. Since they were so similar the people just voyed for Roosevelt. -
Roosevelt's Lend-Lease Plan
Because Great britain was running out of money to aid its army with military weapons, Roosevelt loaned weapons to Britain. He helped pass the Lend-Lease Act. This made it possible to sell, loan, or lease war materials to any nation whose defense was related to the security of the United States. -
Supporting Stalin
The lend-lease also helped Soviet Union with weapons. Americans were aganist this idea of helping Stalin. Roosevelt however, felt like it was a good idea. -
Signing of Atlantic Charter
While on the USS Augusta during one summer, FDR and Winston Churchill met discuss the outcomes of the war. They signed the atlantic charter: a joint declaration of war goals. This included collective security, freedom of the seas, disarmament and self-determination, and economic cooperation. The US is picked sides by supporting the allies over the axis powers. -
Shoot-on-Sight Policy
Roosevelt decided to to attack any german subs on sight because a German sub fired and destroyed a US navy ship. With over 100 dead soldiers, it led to the destruction of the Kearny, Pink Star, and Reuben James. The senate demanded a full war because of this tragedy. -
