When the war began on Sept. 1, 1939, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was president. He was also president when the US entered the war after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Roosevelt died of a brain hemorrage on April 12, 1945. By that point the Allies were winning the war and Germany would surrender within the next 30 days. When Roosevelt died, Harry Truman became the 2nd US president of World War 2. He was re-elected in 1948. -
