President James Monroe was sworn into office on this date. I thought this was important because he was our fifth president and this is when the timeline was supposed to start. -

Rush-Bagot Agreement is written
Ont his date, the British minister agrees to the treaty. This treaty decided the military power allowed on each of the great lakes by each of the nations. This is important because this lessened tension on the Great Lakes after the war of 1812. -
British and Amerrican Diplomats meet
British and American diplomats meet and conclude a treaty resolving most of the issues from the War of 1812. They agree on a northern border of the Louisiana Purchase, fixed at the 49 degrees latitude, from the Lake of the Woods to the Rocky Mountains. Britain also acknowledges U.S. fishing rights off Newfoundland and provides compensation for slaves who fled to British lines. The Rush-Bagot Agreement is formally signed.

The Panic of 1819
Towards the beginging of the year 1819, the economy became to spiral downwards. A large decline in real estate values and an inability to secure bank loans inflates the currency and causes imports and prices to fall. This is important because this shapes how the economy is between 1819 and 1823 -
The Adams-Onis Treaty
The Adams-Onis treaty is resolved in February. The treaty gave Flordia to the U.S. for $5 million. Spain also relinquishes claims to the Oregon Territory. This is important because we have now added to our territory by a lot and this helps the economy. -
Jackson becomes president
Andrew Jackson becomes the 7th president of the United States. To win, he used the what became known as the spoils system. This is important because This was the first use recorded of the use of the spoils system and this also starts his precidency. -
Trail of Tears
Congress passes the Indian Removal Act, sanctioning the relocation of Creek, Chickasaw, Cherokee, Choctaw, and Seminole tribes to land allotments west of the Mississippi river. Cherokee and Creek are forcibly removed from the Southeast onto reservations. Nearly one quarter of the Indians die along the “Trail of Tears.” -
Treaty with France
The French government agrees to a treaty settling spoliation claims by the United States dating back to the Napoleonic Wars. France agrees to pay $5 million but declines to make the payment. They eventually pay when threatened by the U.S. I chose this becuase it helped us pay back some of our own debts. -
The Second Nation Bank
Jackson vetoes a bill that would have extended the life of the Second Bank of the United States. Henry Clay, running against Jackson in the presidential election, proposes the bill to bring the issue of the Bank to the forefront in the election. His supporting of not extending its life gained him a lot of support. I chose this because this was a big event and political disagreement at the time. -
Edmund Roberts
Jackson commissions Edmund Roberts as a “special agent” of the United States to negotiate trade treaties in other countries. Roberts's efforts result in the first treaties between the United States and a number of far eastern governments. I chose this because these treaties opened u[ a new relam of trade to the U.S.
