Rutherford Hayes

Period: Mar 4, 1877 to Mar 4, 1881

19th President. Won the election against Samuel Tildon. Taking troops out of Reconstruction states is something good that Hayes did. When he withdrew these men, good will and local control was restored. (Republican)

James A. Garfield

Period: Mar 5, 1881 to Sep 19, 1881

20th President. His presidency is the second shortest presidency ever, because he was assasssinated. Before he was president, he fought for the Union in the Civil War. He eventually bacame a major general. (Republican)

Chester A. Arthur

Period: Sep 19, 1881 to Mar 4, 1885

21st President. A supporter of civil service reform. He served as a customs collecter in NY. He was the vice president under Garfield. Became president after the assassination of Gerfield. (Republican)

Grover Cleveland

Period: Mar 4, 1885 to Mar 4, 1889

Served as the 22nd and 24th president of the United States. The only president who served two nonconsecutive terms. The only Democratic president that won during a time of Republican domination. Before he was president, he was the mayor of Buffalo, NY, he was a lawyer, and the governor of NY state. (Democratic)

Benjamin Harrison

Period: Mar 4, 1889 to Mar 4, 1893

25th President. The grandson of William Henry Harrison. He supported protective tariffs, but this caused there to be a higher price for people. This started the countries economic problems. He introduced foreign policy goals and carried them out. He signed the Sherman Anitrust Act. (Republican)

William McKinley

Period: Mar 4, 1897 to Sep 15, 1901

25th President. He served as the governor of Ohio and served in Congress before becoming president. A "champion of pretective tariffs." Cuban independence led the US into war with Spain. The US took over Puerto Rico, the Philippines and Guam. He was surprisingly assassinated. (Republican)

Theodore Roosevelt

Period: Sep 14, 1901 to Mar 4, 1909

26th President. A "dedicated Conservationist." Known as the "Trust Buster." He negotiated in order to end the Russo-Japanese War, which earned him a Nobel Peace Prize. Tried to run for president again in 1912. (Republican)

William Howard Taft

Period: Mar 4, 1909 to Mar 4, 1913

27th President. Before being president, Taft worked as a judge in Ohio Superior Court and the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. He was also governor of the Philippines. He was Cecretary of War under Roosevelt. He was given the position of chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court by President Warren Harding. (Republican)

Woodrow Wilson

Period: Mar 4, 1913 to Mar 4, 1921

28th President. Led the US through WWI. Supported World Peace and Democracy. Before his presidency, Wilson served as a university president, a democratic governor of NJ, and a colllege professor. Established the Federal Trade Commision and the Federal Reserve. Wilson negotiating a peace treaty to end WWI earned him a Nobel Peace Prize. (Democratic)

Warren G. Harding

Period: Mar 4, 1921 to Aug 2, 1923

29th President. Died of a heart attack. He commited no crimes, however, his cabinet members did. Before becoming president, Harding was a newspaper publisher and served in the US Senate and teh Ohio Legislature. Involved in teh Teapot Dome Scandal. (Republican)

Calvin Coolidge

Period: Aug 2, 1923 to Mar 4, 1929

30th President. Got the nation through the "Roaring Twenties." Before his presidency, Coolidge was governor of Mass. He liked to limit government funding and supported tax cuts. Some of his decisions, however, led to the Great Depression. (Republican)

Herbert Hoover

Period: Mar 4, 1929 to Mar 4, 1932

31st President. President during the great depression. Hoover didn't realize just how severe the depression was and did almost nothing to help citizens. Before his presidency, Hoover was an engineer. (Republican)

Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Period: Mar 4, 1933 to Apr 12, 1945

32nd President. Led the US out of the Gret Depression. Lead the country to victory over Germany in the 2nd World War. Layed the foudation for United Nations. Died while in office. (Democratic)

Harry S. Truman

Period: Apr 12, 1945 to Jan 20, 1953

33rd President. Made the decision to use atomic bombs on Japan, worked hard to keep Communism contained, and led the US into war with Korea. (Democratic)

Dwight Eisenhower

Period: Jan 20, 1953 to Jan 20, 1961

34th President. Served as a commander of Allied Forces in WWII and led th invasion of D-Day. Negotiated through the problems in the Cold War. Ended the Korean War. Established the Interstate Highway System. (Republican)

John F. Kennedy

Period: Jan 20, 1961 to Nov 22, 1963

35th President. The first Catholic and youngest President. Military Hero. Served in the Senate and Congress. Fought against Cold War tensions. Federally supported civil rights movments. He was assassinated. (Democratic)

Lyndon B. Johnson

Period: Nov 22, 1963 to Jan 20, 1969

36th President. Served in the Us House of Representatives and in th US Senate. Aimed to extinguish poverty. Established medicare and head start. Failed to lead the nation out of the Vietnam War. (Democratic)

Richard Nixon

Period: Jan 20, 1969 to Aug 9, 1974

37th President. The only president who has resigned from office, because he was going to be impeached. A former Senator and Congressman. He was vice president under Eisenhower. Remembered for the Watergate Scandal. (Republican)

Gerald Ford

Period: Aug 9, 1974 to Jan 20, 1977

38th President. First unelected President. A Michigan Congressman. Vice president under Nixon. After the Watergate scandal, citizens didn't have confidence in the government, however, confidence was restored by Ford. Pardoned Nixon. (Republican)

Jimmy Carter

Period: Jan 20, 1977 to Jan 20, 1981

39th President. He lacked popularity mostly because of the hostage situation in Iran. After his presidency, Carter became a humanitarian, diplomat, and an author.

Ronald Reagan

Period: Jan 20, 1981 to Jan 20, 1989

40th President. Before his presidency, Reagan was an actor and the governor of Cali. Negotiated with the Soviet Union to reduce the amount of nuclear arms. Caused an increase in defense spending and a cut in taxes. Brought on the end of the Cold War. (Republican)

George H. W. Bush

Period: Jan 20, 1989 to Jan 20, 1993

41st President. Vice president under Reagan. Before his presidency, Bush was an oil industry executive, was a member of the US House of Representatives, a CIA director, and fought in WWII. Led military operation on Iraq that were successful. (Republican)

Bill Clinton

Period: Jan 20, 1993 to Jan 20, 2001

42nd President. Former governor of Arkansas.During his presidency, unemployment was low, crime rates decreased, and there was a time of "peace and prosperity." Clinton was impeached because he had sexual relations with an intern. (Democratic)

George W. Bush

Period: Jan 20, 2001 to Jan 20, 2009

43rd President. Former governor of Texas. He worked in the oil industry and owned the Texas Rangers. Led the country through the 9/11 terror attacks by declaring war on terrorism. Created the Department of Homeland Security. (Republican)
