In 1796 George Washington’s 2nd term was ending the United States was getting ready for the presidential election. Adams, Washington’s former vice president was going in the run with Thomas Jefferson his real competition preparing as well. Adams was nominated by the Federalists group while the Democratic-Republicans nominated Thomas Jefferson. With a close voting Adams beat Jefferson to become the 2nd President of the United States. -

In the election of 1800 Thomas Jefferson ran against John Adams. Thomas Jefferson ran
for the Democratic-Republicans and John Adams ran for the federalists. Thomas Jefferson
had 73 electoral vote and John Adams had 65 electoral votes. Jefferson won over 8 states
while Adams got 7. The election was really close but the people chose Jefferson to be their

Gibbons v. Ogden
In another case, Gibbons v. Ogden (1824), the Supreme Court upheld the power of the federal government to regulate trade between states. The Court struck down a New York law that tried to control steamboat travel between New York and New Jersey. The Court ruled that a state could regulate trade only within its own borders. McCulloch vs. Maryland
Maryland placed a tax on all banks operating in Maryland. But while McCulloch was the cashier he issued bank notes without complying by the Maryland law.
