Nixon ended the policy of forced assimilation of American Indians. He returned sacred lands and became the 1st American president to give Indians the right to tribal self-determination. -
Independence
Nixon helped protect independence and regain strength due to the reaction to the Oil Embargo of 1973 which set a timetable to end reliance on foreign oil by 1980. -
Avoiding Problems
In 1980, Nixon avoided a second Cuban missile crisis involving a soveit submarine base by adhering to his policy of hard passive headed detente rather than a form of diplomacy.
