French Revolution
This was a violent fight for French citizens from the king’s rule.
Many Americans supported the rebels.
Some however thought that they had
gone too far. America split, and
began to choose sides. -
ALIEN AND SEDATION ACTS + VIRGINIA AND KENTUCKY RESOLUTION
Because President Adams was afraid of critisizem, he passed the sedation act. It said that no one could criticize the president or any government official. The alien act said that to become an American citizen you had to live in America for five years. However the acts didn’t work because they were unconstitutional. In the midst of all this Thomas Jefferson and James Madison made the Virginia and Kentucky Resolution. It urged the states to take action against these acts with “states’ rights.” -

Whiskey Rebellion

including whiskey. Farmer found it
cheaper to ship their wheat once it
was turned into whiskey.
Unfortunately, the new tax made it
expensive so the farmers refused to
pay the taxes. Washington sent
troops in put down the rebellion.
Washington’s actions showed the
citizens that they must obey national laws. -
Jay's treaty
England has a fort and they keep harassing Americans. So this
Jay guy goes to England to make a treaty with England to stop attacking.

The x,y,z affair
France misunderstood Jay’s treaty for an alliance with England. And when we sent diplomats, they were told to pay some money to see the primeinister. The French agents who demanded the bribe were known only as X,Y, and Z. once again Americans called for war. -
MARBURY VS MAISON
It’s the night just before Jefferson takes the house after being elected. John Adams is worried that Jefferson and Madison will take back all he has done. So he decides to appoint a few judges the night before Jefferson comes in. but it gets to late so he leaves the papers for Jefferson.
When Jefferson sees the papers he refuses to deliver them. The court disagreed, sort of. They said Jefferson had to deliver the papers, but that he shouldn’t because what Adams did was unconstitutional. -
LOUISIANA PURRCHISE + LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION
So Jefferson is now president, and he wants to buy New Orleans from the French. The French offer all of the Louisiana Territory, most of the states in the middle of America are from the Louisiana territory. Jefferson aggress to buy all the land, and launches the Lewis and Clark expedition to explore this new territory. -
Impressment of Sailors
In an effort to get the U.S. to aid in
its war effort against France, Great
Britain made a habit of stopping
American ships sailing the Atlantic
Ocean and searching for British
sailors that had deserted the
Royal Navy. Many times, the
sailors they took were American
citizens. The entire event reached
its tipping point when
the American Ship, the Chesapeake ,
was fired on and 21 American
sailors were killed. -
Piracy
The French colonies along the Barbary coast
of Africa made it a habit to stop all foreign
ship sailing near them and demanding that
the ship pay a bribe in order for the ships
to sail in the Barbary waters. Then the
Barbary Coast rulers declared war on the U.S.
and captured the Philadelphia and held the crew
for ransom. Americans soon raided the harbor and
freed their ship and sailors. Eventually a treaty
was struck and bribes were no longe -
Embargo Acts
After years of dealing with both France and
Great Britain’s abuse of our ship, Thomas Jefferson
decided to enact a law that made it illegal for
foreign ships to enter American harbors and
for American ships to sail anywhere except into
other American harbors. He hoped that this act
would avoid war but also teach the foreign nations
that they could no longer interfere with American ships.
The scheme back fired when so many American
sailors lost their jobs, and American merchants lost a -
BATTLE OF TIPPICANOE
There was this “prophet” among the Natives, who tried to make a confederation of Native Americans to push “White men” back east. So the “White men” sent general Harrison, and 1000 troops to Tippecanoe. The Natives ambushed the American troops who then proceeded to fight back and win this battle. -
THE WAR OF 1812 + HARTFORD CONVENTION
So President Madison is now in office and he says that America needs to go into Canada and free them, but Canada didn’t want to be free. They were just fine. And so, when the Americans marched in, they attacked. Then the English attacked American and burned the president’s mansion. Election of 1824
The election of 1824 started out with four men
running for President. (Jackson, Adams, Clay & Crawford)
None of the four received enough electoral votes to
win the Presidency. According to the Constitution,
the election goes to the House of Representative
to decide the winner. Only the top three vote- getters
are eligible to win, so Mr. Crawford dropped out.
The election was won by John Q. Adams, but Andrew Jackson
believed he should have won and accused Clay and Adams
of a “corrupt bar -
Indian Removal Act
Settlers in America were interested in the land
owned by Native Americans in southern America.
At first, the government tried to buy the land,
but the Native Americans refused to sell and
the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Indians.
Nevertheless, President Jackson ordered the forced
removal of all Native Americans to sections in
present day Oklahoma. This became known as the
Trail of Tears because so many Native Americans
died as they were moving west. -
Nat Turner Uprising
Nat Turner was a slave and a minister who led a slave
uprising that resulted in the deaths of 57 white
Southerners. Turner and the slaves were hunted
down and killed. Even though the uprising was
not a success, it really scared white slave owners
and so they began to pass even stricter law in an
effort to control the slaves. -
VETO CHATER OF THE BANK OF AMERICA + PANIC OF 1837
So Jackson saw the President of the National Bank as an enemy because he was a friend of Clay.
So when the bank came for it’s charter early thinking that Jackson wouldn’t veto right before the election. They thought wrong. So when the Bank closed a panic spread because paper money was worthless -

Americans made an excuse for taking over new territory. this excuse was that God wanted them to take the territories. and back then you did NOT argue with God! so this led to the Annexation of Texas. and because Mexico and America could not agree on a boarder, America fought Mexico and won. and Mexico surrendered all that western land. land such as Calafornia, Arizona,Wyoming, New Mexico etc. and America clamed they could do this because God told them to. -

Gold Rush
The discovery of gold in California brought people
from all over the world and all over the U.S. to
California in the pursuit of striking it rich. The population
of California grew so fast that it became a state long
before other western territories. Along with gold,
the rush also resulted in: a more diverse population,
the displaced of Native Americans from their land,
and a lot of economic opportunities. -
The Free Soil Party
With the birth of the Free Soil Party, slavery was a
national issue for the first time in an American election.
The Free Soil Party was formed in order to keep the
spread of slavery out of the western territories.
While the party did win some Congressional
Seats, it was unsuccessful in its bid for the Presidency
