The Second Continental Congress appoints George Washington commander of the army.
He was much more than just a commander in chief he was unique in our worlds history. In June of 1775, George was appointed to Commander in chief of the new Continental Army. As Washington was commander in chief, the British troops got victory at the Battle of Bunker Hill. He has much power and personality in this congress. -EC -

British win the Battle of Bunker Hill, but suffer greater casualties.
The Battle of Bunker Hill was located at the Charlestown Peninsula on the North side of Boston Harbor. There was 2,400 British troops against 1,500 Americans. It was a harsh war. The British ended up with 1,150 killed and wounded. The Americans ended up with estimated at 450 killed and wounded. Although the Brittish gained victory, they suffered severe mishaps during the assaults to the colonies. -DH -
Thomas Paine publishes “Common Sense”, providing strong evidence for independence.
Written in 1776, the document, “Common Sense” challenged the ruling authority of the monarchy and the government. The language that Thomas Paine used to tell the people was the first to openly ask Britain for independence. A quote from him is, “These are the Times that try men’s souls.” which also begins his first crisis paper.
